Honors
Robert
Socolow, professor in the Department
of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and
the Princeton Environmental Institute, has
received the 2003 Leo Szilard Lectureship Award
from the American Physical Society. The award
recognizes outstanding accomplishments by physicists
in promoting the use of physics for the benefit
of society.
Professor
Socolow was cited for "leadership in establishing
energy and environmental problems as legitimate
research fields for physicists, and for demonstrating
that these broadly based problems can be addressed
with the highest scientific standards." The award
will be presented in April at the American Physical
Society's meeting.
H.
Vincent Poor *76 *77, professor of
electrical engineering, will present one of
this year's President's Lectures. On Wednesday,
March 5, Professor Poor will address the recent
revolution in wireless communications, which
has led to a host of applications involving "anytime,
anywhere" connectivity for the communication
of voice, text, and other media. He will explore
the social, political, and economic issues
that are emerging with the new technology as
they did with broadcast radio and the Internet
in the 20th century.

Perry Cook,
professor of computer science, has a new book in print.
Titled Real Sound Synthesis for Interactive Applications,
the book emphasizes physical modeling of sound and focuses
on real-world interactive sound effects.
It is intended for game developers, graphics
programmers, developers of virtual reality systems and
training simulations, and others who want to learn about
computational sound.
It is written at an introductory level, with
mathematical foundations provided in appendices. An enclosed
CD contains code examples and sound files.
"Writing at an introductory level with a sense
of fun and exploration, Perry Cook investigates the physics
and mathematics of creating sounds in the real world for
use in interactive digital settings, such as computer games
and virtual reality," write the editors in the book jacket. "An
enclosed CD/CDROM follows along with the text, allowing
readers to listen to the guitar strings, African drums,
and squeaky doors that Cook models.
"Real Sound Synthesis
is a book for anyone who wants to learn about computational
sound."
The King and Rodriguez-Iturbe
Ignacio Rodriguez-Iturbe,
the Theodora Shelton Pitney Professor of Environmental
Studies and professor
of civil and environmental engineering, was presented with
the 12th Stockholm Water Prize by King Carl XVI of Sweden
in August. Professor Rodriguez-Iturbe was the first person
of South American heritage ever to win the prize, and only
the second hydrologist to do so. In introducing Professor
Rodriguez-Iturbe, Rafael Bras said, "To be a leader you
need followers. Dr. Rodriguez-Iturbe's intellect, his tireless
mind, and his warm personality attract a lot of followers
throughout the world. There is no doubt that we are honoring
the leader of his generation, the individual who defined
the intellectual agenda of modern hydrologic sciences."
