Intel donates laptops to SEAS

by David Barry

Computer labs aren't always open when one needs one. One's own laptop doesn't always malfunction at a convenient time. And, of course, extension cords are often short by a mile or so.

Luckily for students in the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS), Intel and the SEAS Office of Graduate Affairs have provided a backup plan for students when their own technology falls short.

It's called the Intel Notebook Loan Program.

No, they're not going to hand you a spiral-bound note pad when you come in screaming, "My hard drive has a virus!" or "I need to have Internet access while I'm doing field research!" Intel donated 10 laptops and software for use by student organizations and students who are working on special projects. Intel's donation is valued at $19,750.

"Laptops aren't affordable for all students," said Assistant Dean for Graduate Affairs David Mendez, "but they can be invaluable in some circumstances. These extra machines are great support tools."

Student organizations may use them to take minutes at meetings, take notes at national conferences, update group Web sites, or maintain membership databases.

Individual students may use them for special projects. The machines are available on loan for up to a week at a time.

To learn more about the Intel Notebook Loan Program, or to borrow a laptop, contact Josephine Kelly at the Office of Graduate Affairs at 258-2917 or jkelly@princeton.edu.
