GRADUATE TRAVEL FUNDS
The Office of Graduate Affairs (OGA) has a limited number of travel grants available for enrolled graduate students who are presenting a technical paper or poster at a professional society conference. The work must have been accepted for presentation during the span of the student’s graduate program, and must be presented during that time. The travel grants are designed to enable students to attend a meeting when funds are unavailable from other sources. The grants are not intended to replace support from the research contract with which the student is associated.
Graduate Students
To request a travel grant ($250 for technical paper / $100 for poster session), students must submit the following information electronically to Stephen Friedfeld (SF), Associate Dean for Graduate Affairs, with a copy to his assistant, Jo Kelly (JK), at least four weeks prior to the conference start date:
- the purpose, date, and location of the conference;
- the title of the paper / poster;
- an abstract for the paper / poster;
- a travel budget for all trip expenses;
- department and advisor name;
- (optional) interest in scheduling a practice talk prior to the conference with an audience of Engineering School graduate students (contact JK for details).
Students are eligible for one travel grant per academic year, based on the availability of funding.
Faculty Advisors
Faculty advisors must submit electronically to SF a statement supporting the application, indicating the value of the student’s presentation or poster towards his/her overall degree progress, as well as the need for OGA support. Advisors are eligible to receive travel grant funding for up to two students during the academic year, based on the availability of funding.
SF will review the submitted application. If approved, the department’s business manager will be notified, and the money will be applied toward the travel expenses when the travel voucher is processed. The department must process the paperwork within one month of return; otherwise, the funding will be made available to another student.
