Engineering Security: Withstanding Disasters
On Aug. 1, 2007, the I-35 bridge over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis collapsed, plunging rush-hour traffic into the water below.
On Dec. 24, 2004, a massive undersea earthquake triggered a devastating tsunami in the Indian Ocean, taking the lives of more than 225,000 people.
Some disasters are preventable; others are not. In both cases, the insight and guidance of engineers is essential to avert those tragedies that can be stopped or lessen the impact of those that cannot.
