In order to navigate through natural environments, flagellated bacteria must be able to sense and respond to mechanical stresses from their surroundings. These adaptive responses take place at multiple scales, ranging from subunit exchange in flagellar molecular machinery to whole-cell morphological changes in flagellar number.
