The University of Connecticut Health Center has announced that Dr. Cato Laurencin was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He was recognized by AAAS, the world’s largest general scientific society, for his international leadership in biomaterials sciences and engineering, advancements in musculoskeletal regeneration and dedication to mentoring students.

Dr. Laurencin is professor of orthopaedic surgery in UConn’s School of Medicine and professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, materials science and engineering, and biomedial engineering in UConn’s School of Engineering. He is also the founding director of both the Institute for Regenerative Engineering and the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Center for Biomedical, Biological, Physical and Engineering Sciences at the UConn Health Center. He is a specialist in biomaterials science and engineering and has invented new technologies, some of which have been patented, for bone and soft tissue regeneration with a focus on healing knee and shoulder injuries.

Dr. Laurencin has received numerous honors and much recognition over the course of his pioneering career and has been elected a fellow in a number of medical and science associations. He earned a BSE in chemical engineering from Princeton in 1980 and went on to receive, simultaneously, a medical degree from Harvard Medical School and a Ph.D. in biochemical engineering/biotechnology from MIT in 1987.
