Norman Augustine, former chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin, was honored with a 2014 U.S. News STEM Leadership Hall of Fame Award for advancing science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education and workforce preparation.
Augustine chaired the committee responsible for the influential 2005 report Rising Above the Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future. In summary, the congressionally requested report indicated the need for this nation to strengthen education in STEM subjects in order to produce a workforce that can compete effectively in a global economy. Five years later the same committee revisited the situation and issued an updated report.
The awards ceremony took place during the 3rd annual U.S. News Solutions National Leadership Conference, held in April in Washington, D.C. This honor is one of many bestowed upon Augustine, including the National Medal of Technology, the Joint Chiefs of Staff Distinguished Public Service Award and five Distinguished Civilian Service Awards. Augustine received a BSE in 1957 and an MSE in 1959 from Princeton, both degrees in aeronautical engineering.
